Let’s chat about mobile marketing. Have you considered it at all yet as part of your internet marketing campaigns?  Thumbonomics, Chapter 12 gives you an easy launch into this brave new world. I’m sure you don’t need to know how many millions of Americans use smart phones to realize mobile is a trend whose time has already come, big time.  Luckily, it’s not difficult to get on top of this trend, today.

The big three platforms you need to know for mobile marketing right now are Yelp, FourSquare and QR codes.

1. Yelp: Once upon a time, Yelp was only for restaurant reviews, but these days it is for every-kind-of-thing reviews.

I rarely use any local business without first finding out what my peers have to say about it on Yelp. And have you noticed how frequently Yelp reviews show up on the first page of a Google search?

Encourage people who already love your products or services to review you on Yelp.

Although definitely a social media platform, because people are posting and sharing information, this is one you don’t need to continually update. However, you might want to check in with your Yelp account regularly to see what people are saying about you. Bad reviews indicate problems you’ll need to address, sooner rather than later.

Tip: Sign up for a business account on Yelp and put your most important key word or phrase right in your name. Remember to use them in your profile as well for greater findability.

2. Foursquare: This popular social site lets users “check in” to a place when they’re there, tell friends where they are, track the history of where they’ve been and who they’ve been there with. To get going with Foursquare, simply set up an account for your business.

TIP: Always have some kind of special offer set up with Foursquare, such as a small gift or discount that your fans can access when they check in.

3. QR Codes: These are not a social site, but a way of driving customers to your website, landing page, blog, Yelp, Twitter or Facebook business page. In case you are not familiar, QR codes are those square, black and white bar code looking things that are showing up everywhere. Users scan them with their smart phone and are taken to a specific page, special offer or something fun.

We recommend create a QR code or a series of them with different promotional offers to use on all your marketing material. Yes, I know this is a whole new “techno geek” thing you’ll need to master, but it’s really not so complicated at all. Chapter 12 tells you all the details you need to know about why QR codes are so popular and ways you can use them to market your business in a way people really seem to enjoy.
