Maybe I’m showing my age but I get frustrated when creating content for my social media and blogs. It takes a lot of work to look trendy in your posts. Today I'm going to give you a few suggestions on how to create content that is interesting, timely and works well with any business, no matter how “boring” you think your company may appear in social media.
I love “boring” brands like manufacturing, distribution, plumbing and blue collar businesses. So many companies are told by marketing experts to “be social” but at the end of the day, it's not about how many followers you get, it’s about how many of your followers care about your content. Can they connect with your post and does it keep you top of mind? Which converts to customers.
I would like to introduce you to the concept of “Newsjacking”. I did not invent this and it has been around for years, It's just not something that a lot of people were talking about. I’m going to give you a new twist on this topic and suggest that you look at newsjacking as an integral part of your social media content creation.
Think of it this way: your followers hear a story in the news and automatically they say “Hey I heard about this in the news this morning, what’s your take?” and then you give them your unique POV. Now you have grabbed their attention and they want to hear more of what you have to say, on that subject.
Pay attention, look for patterns in the world and report back to your social media team or manager.. I don’t care how “boring” your services are like industrial products, construction contractors etc. Newsjack, like hijacking, is putting your ear to the ground and listening to what’s happening in the world and reporting back with your unique perspective on that news event. As if you were wearing rose colored glasses, and putting your filter on the most exciting events in the world.
Jeff Bezos, Richard Branson and Elon Musk are all competing in the space wars.
Who will be the first to take tourists to space? If you are a metal fabrication company, what kind of perspective can you share to your social followers about your knowledge that pertains to that news event. Here are a few ideas for what that company could write about in their blog, images for social media and hashtags to make it SUPER current and albeit “trendy”.
- How is the rocket constructed?
- How do you work with clients on special projects?
- Talk about cutting edge technologies in your industry
- Relate back to historical references and facts
- Keep it relatable to everyone
- “As a CEO and Industry Expert”…
As part of a daily marketing regiment, grab your cup of joe and listen to the news. What perks up your ear or makes you raise your eyebrows? How can you connect your company to the latest industry news moment that everyone is talking about? Post that on social and NOW you have my attention. I like it. Follow it. Share it. Comment on it. Subscribe to it. I connected with your post because it was top of mind in the media, to the people who should follow you and your existing followers.

I did a webinar on “Kardashian’s Marketing Secrets Revealed”. I have observed so much hype and controversy around this group of ladies. You can think what you will, but these ladies know marketing.
I think their mom-ager, Kris Jenner, is the real genius behind their brands but you cannot help but be impressed by their sheer selling power for whatever they create. I heard a story on Klohe Kardashian and her new product “Dose and Company” collagen creamer.
